Incident Management Workflow: From Detection to Resolution

A structured incident management workflow minimizes downtime and ensures consistency across support teams. Below is the 5-step ITIL operational lifecycle from initial incident detection to closure.

Step 1: Detection & Reporting

Incidents are identified automatically through infrastructure monitoring webhooks or reported directly by end users via web portal or email.

Step 2: Logging & Categorization

The ITSM platform logs ticket details, assigns a tracking ID, and tags the affected service component taxonomy (Server, DB, Network, Application).

Step 3: Prioritization & SLA Assignment

The system calculates P1-P4 priority based on Impact and Urgency, starting response and resolution SLA countdown timers.

Step 4: Investigation & Worklog Tracking

Assigned engineers investigate root causes, linking relevant knowledge base solution articles and recording minute-by-minute worklog notes.

Step 5: Resolution & Verification Closure

Once services are verified operational, the ticket status changes to Resolved, notifying the requester and triggering deflection article generation.
